Lady of the Rocks
Oil on canvas, 70 × 50 cm
Set in the snowy heart of the Northern Black Forest, Lady of the Rocks portrays the moment of profound encounter between a hunter and a mysterious woman of the forest — a reference to the local legend in which a man pursuing game instead finds a supernatural lady who rebukes him and urges him to change his life. The composition centres on the woman in vibrant, modern dress, feeding a fawn, while the hunter (the artist) stands nearby, his boxer dog at his side, all framed by monumental rocks and fir trees.
Technically, the painting is defined by rich impasto and bold colour contrasts: the crisp whites and cool blues of snow are charged with warm tones in the woman’s garment and the dog’s coat, creating a tension between stillness and revelation. The rock formations and trees form strong vertical and diagonal lines that guide the viewer’s eye toward the human drama in the centre, while the gestural brushstrokes enliven the surface and evoke the forest’s wild energy.
Psychologically, the painting explores a moment of confrontation and awakening. The hunter, portrayed by the artist himself, stands at the threshold between instinct and reflection, facing the woman who embodies nature’s moral voice. Her act of nurturing the fawn contrasts with his role as a pursuer, revealing an inner conflict between taking and caring. The dog by his side anchors the scene in reality, linking the myth to the artist’s own life. Through this encounter, Lady of the Rocks becomes a meditation on humility, empathy, and the possibility of change.
Within Tales of the Black Forest, this work reinforces Laime’s ongoing dialogue between myth and personal experience. Lady of the Rocks embodies the spirit of the series — transforming local legends into intimate reflections on identity, transformation, and the mysterious power of nature.
